Open, review, install

  1. Open the downloaded file in Finder. Emoji Picker opens Settings with Files Waiting for Review. Choose Review beside the file. You can also choose Import Pack… in Settings.
  2. Read the contents and any warnings. Check the name, version, and insertion text, including any spaces or line breaks. A name alone does not prove who made a shared pack.
  3. Choose Install Pack. If the pack is already installed, review the offered replacement or keep the installed version. Opening a file or cancelling its review leaves installed content unchanged.

For a built-in starter pack, choose Preview… → Review Installation… → Install Pack in Settings. Once installed, select its name and a category in the Library, or search an alias. With the default opening sequence, type ;support_thanks, choose the result, and confirm it.

Packs contain text and metadata. They do not run scripts or update themselves automatically.

Make a pack your own

Choose Create Pack… in Settings → Expression Packs, or choose Edit… beside an installed pack.

  1. Name the pack and add an entry. Choose its kind, give it a name, and enter the exact text to insert, at least one search alias, and useful keywords.
  2. Add categories and choose their entries. Reorder entries and category membership to match how you browse.
  3. Resolve any validation messages, then use Save or Save As… to keep your draft as an .emojipack file.
  4. Choose Review Installation… and confirm when you want those changes in Search and the Library.

Saving a draft and installing it are separate actions. Your installed version keeps working while you edit. Unsaved edits are not included in personal backups; save your draft file before closing it.

Editing, sharing, and replacing packs

Edit… keeps an installed pack’s identity and starts its next version. Duplicate Installed in the composer creates an independent pack. To continue a saved draft, use Open… inside the composer; opening the same file in Finder starts an installation review.

Use Export… beside an installed pack to save a portable file. Share it through a channel you choose. It includes the pack’s text and metadata, including anything personal you added.

A file with the same pack identity is reviewed against the installed version. Review warnings for changed content, older versions, or replacements before confirming. Use Remove… to remove an installed pack; export a copy first if you want to keep it.

Back up your whole setup

Pack export saves one pack for sharing. Settings → Personal Backups saves your pins, aliases, collections, shortcodes, installed packs, remembered emoji variants, and portable preferences together in an encrypted .emojibackup file.

Save a backup

  1. Save open composer drafts separately. Backups contain installed packs, not unsaved drafts or uninstalled pack files.
  2. Choose whether to include recent items, insertion history, and usage statistics. These are excluded by default.
  3. Enter and confirm a password of at least 12 characters. Choose Save Encrypted Backup… and keep the file somewhere accessible if this Mac is unavailable.

Restore a backup

  1. Back up the receiving Mac’s current setup if you want to keep it.
  2. Choose Choose Backup…, enter the password, then select Unlock and Preview.
  3. Review the counts and preference scope. Choose Restore and Relaunch to replace your current personal data and reload the app.

Restore replaces personal content; it does not merge it. A backup that includes history replaces the receiving Mac’s history and usage statistics. A backup without history preserves them. Licenses, macOS permissions, login-item settings, and verified setup progress stay specific to each Mac.

Keep your password safely: Emoji Picker cannot recover it. Passwords are exact, including spaces and case. A wrong password, damaged file, or unsupported backup is rejected before replacing your data.

If something does not show up

I opened or edited a pack, but Search has not changed

Check that you confirmed Install Pack or Replace Pack. Opening a file starts a review; saving a draft only saves the file. After installation, browse the pack by name in the Library or search one of its aliases.

Search or insertion is not working in another app

Check your opening sequence, whether the app is paused or excluded, and the listening status in Emoji Picker. Follow its Accessibility and Retry guidance if needed. Try the bundled insertion check, or copy from Quick Find and paste into the destination app.

Ask a question on the support board. Include your Emoji Picker and macOS versions, keyboard layout, opening route, and affected app. Keep passwords, license keys, backups, and private text out of public posts; use the private contact form for sensitive support details.
